ASID Victoria - Workshop

Decision making support for people rarely heard

When:  Tuesday 19 June 2018

From:  9.00am to 3.00pm - Please BYO Lunch

This workshop is designed for those who support someone with a severe intellectual disability who communicates informally.  Within this practical and interactive workshop, Jo will introduce participants to a range of communication tools and approaches designed to support a person with severe intellectual disability to have their will and preferences realised through the decisions that are made within their lives.

Participants will gain valuable insights from presenters and fellow participants.

Dr Jo Watson is a Speech Pathologist with over thirty years’ experience supporting people with intellectual disability, and those who know and love them.  Her research and practice has centred around how best to support people with intellectual disability who communicate informally to have their preferences acknowledged, interpreted and acted upon through supported decision making approaches.

Gloria Jelleff was employed as a cottage mother in a Family Group Home in 1971. In 1983 she became foster mother to 10 year old, Michael. Michael was the first child with an intellectual disability to be raised in a Family Group Home in Victoria. In 1994, Michael moved into a Group home in Geelong. Soon after, Gloria moved to Geelong and worked as a disability support worker in the Barwon region until her retirement in 2016.

She is a passionate advocate for the rights of people with disability to participate in the community and to have a good quality of life. In 2009 she received a Disability Services Award for her services to the disability sector. In 2010, she was inducted to Women’s Public Service Honour Board for her services to the community.
