2022 | STOMPing out the use of inappropriate psychotropic drugs for people with intellectual and other disabilities

Presented by Mandy Donley, the Senior Practitioner in Victoria, Professor Shoumi Deb, Imperial College London and Ms Bharati Limbu, Imperial College London, 12 April 2022.

What is this webinar about?

Stopping Over-Medication of People with a Learning Disability (STOMP) has been co-produced by the Royal Colleges of Nursing, Psychiatrists and GPs, as well as the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, the British Psychological Society and NHS England. The goal is to improve the quality of life of people with an intellectual disability, autism, or both by reducing the potential harm of inappropriate psychotropic drugs.

In Australia, efforts to reduce the use of psychotropic medication through practice regulation, most recently through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), has not been effective, with both research and reports showing long-term and unregulated use respectively.

The SPECTROM training program was developed for support staff to help reduce the overuse of psychotropic medication.

Australia has recently established a STOMP network (STOMPOZ). In this webinar, Mandy Donley, the Senior Practitioner in Victoria, will be joined by Professor Shoumi Deb and Ms Bharati Limbu from Imperial College London to discuss STOMP and SPECTROM, and discuss how everyone in the disability sector can help to stomp out the inappropriate use of psychotropic drugs for people with intellectual and other disabilities. Considerable time will be allocated for live Q&A. All professionals in disability services, clinicians, and families are welcome to attend.
