ASID Journals | Expressions of Interest: Self-Advocate Writing

Over the past few years, ASID has run a trial program. This program supports people with intellectual disabilities to write responses to articles in our journal, Research and Practice in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. You can see examples in recent issues here.

In 2026–27, ASID will give grants to two groups in Australia and/or Aotearoa New Zealand. Each group will receive $6,000 to write two self-advocate commentaries ($3,000 for each one).

The money must include fair payment for the self-advocates.

Helping self-advocates share their ideas is an important skill. This support helps people with intellectual disabilities express their own views and have them written down.

If you want to apply for a grant, please send a short expression of interest. Include:

  • Your name(s) and where you work (as the facilitator/s)
  • Your experience helping self-advocates share their views (include a link to an example if you can)
  • Some simple information about the self-advocates and their backgrounds
  • A basic budget. This should show:
    • how much money will be paid to self-advocates and why
    • how much money will be paid to the facilitator(s) and why

Please send your expression of interest to the Secretary, Alan Hough, at alan@purposeatwork.com.au by 31 May 2026.
