Call for abstracts

The 2023 conference of The Australasian Society for Intellectual Disability (ASID) will be face to face only. It will be in Melbourne from Wednesday 22 to Friday 24 November. The conference theme is valuing different perspectives. We invite you to submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation related to this theme.

An oral presentation is where you talk while standing on a platform in front of the audience. Most people use PowerPoint slides to show what they are talking about. The audience will ask questions when you finish talking. The session chair will introduce you and manage any questions.

A poster presentation is where you prepare a large poster about your topic. You print the poster and bring it to the conference. The organisers put it on a board and you stand next to it at a specific time during the conference. People at the conference walk around and read the posters. They may talk to the poster authors. The posters then stay on display during the conference so people can continue to look at them. You do not need to stand by your poster all the time.

The conference program committee will review all the abstracts. They will decide which to accept.
You must submit an abstract if you want to present at the conference.
When we say presentation we mean either an oral or poster presentation.
These instructions apply to all presentations.

Abstract topics

There are three types of presentations:

  1. Accounts of lived experiences or projects led by people with intellectual disabilities.
  2. Reflections or accounts of service models or issues relevant to people with intellectual disabilities.
  3. Reports of original research or evaluation relevant to people with intellectual disabilities.

You must select one of the three topics which your abstract relates to.

Length of presentations

All oral presentations are 20 minutes for talking and 10 minutes for questions.

For poster presentations you must be with your poster at the welcome event on the first day of the conference.

Abstract requirements

Abstract submissions close on Wednesday 21 June 2023 at 11:59PM. You can submit more than one abstract. Each abstract submission must be done one at a time. You can edit your abstract even after you have submitted it until Wednesday 21 June 2023 at 11:59PM.

There are three parts to an abstract.

  1. You must use the following headings.
  • Title: what is the name of your presentation. No more than 10 words.
  • Background: why this topic is important and what is the aim of your presentation.
  • Method: what did you do and how did you do it.
  • Findings: what did you find out.
  • Implications: what do your findings mean. What actions should others take when they know about your findings.

You must write no more than 150 words. You must write in Plain English. This means; sentences are short. You use active words. You do not use technical terms, jargon, abbreviations, or acronyms. Do not include any references, tables, or pictures.

  • You must enter your abstract into the text box online.
  • It is best to type it out first in Word and then copy and paste it.

You must also fill in the following information.

  • Your first name, surname, and affiliation (where you work or the organisation you belong to)
  • The first name, surname and affiliation of all of the writers in the abstract
  • Who is going to make the oral presentation or be there to stand by the poster
  • If there is more than one person presenting, then tick the box next to their name
  • All presenters will have to register and pay to attend the conference

2. Main messages. Use 3 dot points to say what you want people to remember about your presentation. Each dot point must be one sentence.

3. Presenter biographies

Describe the presenters using no more than 50 words for each person:

  • Write about the presenter in the third person. For example, Brent works for the Education Department.
  • Include the presenters position and their experience. For example, Brent is a consultant and he has years of experience in disability services.
  • Describe the presenters qualifications, awards, and published work (if applicable). For example, Brent has a PhD. He has published about policy and Positive Behaviour Support.
  • Make sure this information is relevant to the ASID conference.

More than one author

Often teams work on research and projects. Your abstract can have more than one author. But everyone who is going to talk at the conference must be registered and pay a registration fee. We will send all information about abstracts to the person who made the submission. Please share this information with all other authors as they will not receive separate information.
